Sean Bean's Black Death Has Overtaken U.K.

There's no word yet as to when we can expect to see this over here in the States, but the new film Black Death has been released in the U.K. and features Lord of the Rings's star Sean Bean, David Warner (The Omen, Doctor Who, Sweeney Todd), and Carice van Houten (Repo Men, Valkyrie). The movie centers around "a knight and a monk who investigate reports of people rising from the dead." According to a review done by U.K. film blog Hey U Guys, the film is very "overtly about faith, religion and superstition but (it) very cleverly constructs a narrative in which both sides represented in the film are held up to scrutiny." It is also compared to (the original) The Wicker Man. After the jump, you can check out more excerpts from the review and some info on the movie.

More from the review:

"The film Black Death focuses heavily on religion and superstition and it is when discussing these themes of fanaticism that it is most interesting."

"With very heavy shades of The Wicker Man (the original), Black Death pitches a devout Christian against a pagan group and its leader who desperately want him to renounce his god and succumb to more base instincts. What could be a simple retread of a wonderful film becomes something more; Christopher Smith handles the subject matter brilliantly, bringing depth and multi-layered subtext."

"The film is very overtly about faith, religion and superstition but very cleverly constructs a narrative in which both sides represented in the film are held up to scrutiny and I felt there was a clear anti-superstition message running throughout."
